What is Black Tourmaline?

Black Tourmaline is a major contender for top protection stone, while also very useful for purifying and dispelling negative energies. Tourmaline has a prismatic crystal habit and it will often have many striations that run parallel to one another. It also typically has triangular and rounded cross-sections and can be found with or within many other minerals. One common example is when it is found in needle-like formations running through quartz, this is then called tourmalinated quartz, which will have properties of both quartz and black tourmaline.

History

Black Tourmaline has ritualistic history dating back to at least the 15th century and has always been used as an extremely protective stone. Once called, schorl, this stone can protect you from psychic attacks and radiation given off by electronic devices. If you’re not already on board, it also happens to be one of the most powerful grounding stones available and one of the most effective crystals for stress relief.

Properties of Tourmaline

There are many different colors of tourmaline, although black is the most common, and it differs because of the minerals present at the time the stone was formed. Black Tourmaline is formed when hot waters and/or vapors and the minerals necessary to form tourmaline move into pockets and fractures, which creates a space to allow the crystal structure to form. This stone has an abundance of iron and manganese which is what causes the black coloration. These minerals also cause this stone to contain magnetic properties and gives it the ability to hold a charge.

Uses

Black Tourmaline can also be used in lots of different ways and different rituals. When meditating, use this stone to activate your root chakra, located at the base of your spine. This is necessary, if you are having a lack of energy or low enthusiasm. For gridding, place one piece in each corner or each of the four cardinal points of your home or office, this creates a protective shield around your space.
